Abstract

Islamic Boarding Schools (Ponpes) as traditional Islamic educational institutions have unique characteristics that distinguish them from the formal education system. The learning motivation of students in the Islamic boarding school environment is influenced by complex factors, ranging from spirituality, social environment, kiai, to life goals. Nurul Khoir Islamic Boarding School in Wonorejo, Surabaya, is an example of an Islamic boarding school that tries to integrate traditional values ​​with the demands of modernity, so it is interesting to study the learning motivation of its students. Purpose: This study aims to explore in depth the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations that encourage students to study at Nurul Khoir Islamic Boarding School. Method: This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews with 15 students, participant observation, and documentation studies. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis technique of the Braun and Clarke model, which includes the processes of transcription, familiarization, coding, theme search, theme review, and reporting. Results: The research findings revealed three main themes of students' learning motivation: (1) Supportive Spiritual Motivation, Family Expectations, and Islamic Boarding School Traditions), and (3) Practical-Functional Religious Motivation (Worship, Seeking Allah's Pleasure, Emulating the Kiai), (2) Socio-Cultural Motivation (Environmental Motivation) and (3) Environmental Motivation (Increasing General Knowledge, Preparing for the Future, and Self-Development). The interaction of these three motivations creates a dynamic and mutually reinforcing motivational ecosystem. Conclusion: Students' learning motivation at Nurul Khoir Islamic Boarding School is multidimensional and interrelated. The implementation of qualitative methodology successfully reveals the nuances and complexities of these motivations that may not be captured by a quantitative approach. These findings have important implications for Islamic boarding school managers in designing learning programs that can maintain and enhance spiritual motivation while addressing the practical challenges of students in the contemporary era.
