This article discusses Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas’s perspective on Islamic educational material based on the interpretation of Al-Baqarah verse 31, which highlights the human need for knowledge. From the ontological and epistemological dimensions of knowledge, Al-Attas classifies it into two categories: fard ‘ain (religious knowledge) such as the Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, and Tawhid, which cultivate spiritual awareness; and fard kifayah (scientific and rational knowledge) such as mathematics, physics, and social sciences, which develop human capability as khalifah (vicegerent). These educational materials represent an extension of the ontological foundation of education aimed at fulfilling the ultimate goals of Islamic education.
