Abstract

Until now, Islamic Education in schools has been primarily understood as merely memorizing material and practicing ritual worship, thus failing to have a tangible impact on the social lives of students living in a diverse environment. As a result, some of the younger generation tend to think narrowly and are less tolerant. This study examines how moderation-based Islamic Education can be offered as an alternative to instill open-mindedness, tolerance, and a love for the homeland in students. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study design at SMK NU Tulungagung. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document reviews, then tested for validity using source and method triangulation. The primary informants of the study were teachers, students, the principal, and parents, with school documents as supporting evidence. This study aimed to describe the practice of applying religious moderation in Islamic education learning and identify the supporting factors and obstacles teachers face. The results showed that moderation in Islamic education encouraged students to be more tolerant, inclusive, and have national awareness. Teachers used various strategies such as discussions, inspirational stories, and religious and social activities. Although there were obstacles in the form of limited teaching materials, short learning time, and the influence of the external environment, the role of teachers as role models and the support of the school were the keys to success
