Islamisasi Ilmu Pengetahuan Perspektif Syed Muhammad Naquib Al Attas; Relevansinya terhadap Sistem Pendidikan Islam

Abstract

The development of modern science, which has been strongly influenced by Western paradigms, has raised epistemological concerns within Islamic education, particularly when knowledge is understood from a secular perspective and relies primarily on reason and empirical experience. This issue encouraged Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas to develop the concept of the Islamization of knowledge as a response to the secularization of knowledge and the dominance of the Western worldview. This study aims to analyze the concept of the Islamization of knowledge from al-Attas’s perspective and its relevance to the Islamic education system. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research. Data were obtained from al-Attas’s works, books, journal articles, and other relevant literature, which were analyzed descriptively and analytically. The findings indicate that the Islamization of knowledge is not merely the process of attaching Islamic labels to modern knowledge, but rather an effort to liberate knowledge from secular elements, dualism, and worldviews that contradict Islamic principles, and to reposition knowledge within the framework of the Islamic worldview. This concept is relevant to Islamic education in developing educational objectives, curricula, epistemology, and students’ character through the integration of knowledge, faith, and adab. Its implication is that Islamic education should integrate religious and general knowledge while positioning revelation, reason, and empirical experience proportionally to cultivate knowledgeable, ethical, and Islamically oriented individuals
